Interior Design – Freedom to absorb is a core belief of all projects by Assume Vivid Astro Focus, the artist collective led by Brazilian Eli Sudbrack and Frenchman Christophe Hamaide-Pierson. It’s certainly part of “avalanches volcanoes asteroids floods,” an immersive, site-specific installation commissioned by California’s Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, where it’s on view through December 31. The tactile setting comprises a range of mixed media, including printed rugs, hanging fabric, and hand-painted and stenciled murals. Visitors can interact with the space by laying on the ground, listening to or playing music, rearranging elements, and creating their own performances using the provided materials. Also included are documentary pictures of AVAF’s past installations and performances, details of wallpapers, and screenshots of seminal video works. As for the show’s title, which, when shortened, is the same acronym as the collective, refers to the artists’ anxiety around natural disasters.
